Fire Adapted 50: Phase 1 (Sly Park) is the first of a series of wildfire fuel break projects to be completed as part of Fire Adapted 50, an innovative all-lands approach to increasing fire resiliency and fire adapted communities along the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) of the U.S. Highway 50 corridor. Phase 1 was completed in July 2018 as a collaborative effort between CAL FIRE (provider of funding & direction), the El Dorado County Resource Conservation District (project manager) and El Dorado Irrigation District and Sierra Pacific Industries (landowners) under the context of the South Fork American River Cohesive Strategy and the Sly Park Vegetation Management Plan. A total of 644 acres of land were treated using a combination of mastication and hand thinning methods. Long term management is scheduled to be conducted using treatments prescribed under the Sly Park Vegetation Management Plan, which include prescribed broadcast burning, brush cutting and pile burning. These treatments are intended to maintain the vegetation in a condition that is resilient to wildfire.
